Both tests are performed per <a href=\"https:\/\/endolab.org\/de\/osteosynthesis\/astm-f543\/\">ASTM F543<\/a> to measure fracture torque and insertion torque. At least five samples should be tested in each test configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>EXECUTIVE SUMMARY<\/strong><br>The mechanical evaluation according to ISO 19023 focuses on the torsional behaviour of orthodontic anchor screws. Two static tests are used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>fracture torque<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insertion torque<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both tests are based on the torsional test method described in ASTM F543. Five specimens are tested for each configuration.<br>Fracture torque determines the maximum torque that the screw can withstand before failure. Insertion torque evaluates the torque required to insert the screw into a representative artificial bone material under defined conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Read more&#8230;<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Purpose of the tests<\/strong><br>Orthodontic anchor screws are temporary devices that provide skeletal anchorage for orthodontic appliances and are removed after completion of treatment. Unlike permanent dental implants, they are not intended for long-term osseointegration.<br>ISO 19023 was developed to provide standardized information that allows meaningful comparison between different orthodontic anchor screw systems. The torsional tests are particularly relevant because the screws are exposed to rotational loading during insertion and removal.<br>The manufacturer specifies both fracture torque and insertion torque under worst-case conditions, and the measured values are evaluated against the declared ranges or tolerances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fracture torque<\/strong><br>The fracture torque test determines the torsional resistance of the orthodontic anchor screw.<br>The screw is tested using an apparatus and procedure based on ASTM F543. Torque is increased until the maximum torque is reached and failure occurs.<br>Five specimens are tested. The resulting fracture torque provides information about the mechanical limit of the screw under torsional loading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Insertion torque<\/strong><br>The insertion torque test evaluates the torque required to insert the orthodontic anchor screw into a representative artificial bone material.<br>The screw is inserted according to the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions, including any specified predrilling procedure. A high-density synthetic bone analogue is selected to represent a mechanically demanding condition.<br>The maximum insertion torque is recorded for each specimen. ISO 19023 requires the insertion torque not to exceed the fracture torque of the screw. Five specimens are tested.<br>The choice of artificial bone material is important because its density has a direct influence on the measured insertion torque. For comparative testing, the selected material and density should therefore be documented consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Worst-case configuration<\/strong><br>ISO 19023 requires fracture torque and insertion torque to be specified under worst-case conditions.<br>Depending on the available product range, the critical configuration can be influenced by factors such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>shaft diameter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>thread geometry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>screw length<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>neck and head geometry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>material<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insertion mode<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selected specimen configuration should represent the mechanically critical design within the product family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dimensions and materials<\/strong><br>In addition to torsional testing, ISO 19023 requires manufacturers to specify relevant screw dimensions and material information. The dimensions include, where applicable, thread diameters, overall length, shaft length, thread length and the dimensions of the head and neck.<br>The standard also specifies recognized titanium materials or, for other materials, requires the relevant material composition to be declared.
